If you have a cotton-blend or linen sofa, you can use either water or a solvent cleaner. Start by using a dry and clean white hand towel to brush the sofa. Then sprinkle it with baking soda which helps release lurking smells. Let it sit for 20 minutes before vacuuming. If the piece has any stains, use a cleaning solution and gently remove it.

If you own a leather sofa, start by vacuuming it. Then, lightly spray the leather with a solution of vinegar and water to disinfect it and quickly wipe it down. Buy a leather cleaner for more heavily soiled areas.
